re: Time Magazine mentions BM

flipped over there and read the article then clicked on the author to see just who the guy is and it says he lives in Chicago with an angry cat. Somehow that isn't surprising, considering he doesn't want to be bothered to print out postage at home or make a trip to the post office. I walk to the post office. I really can't be sympathetic and really--what is the worth of that article? Many here have lost jobs that went overseas or to corporate raiders who sell off assets and lay everyone off. Both things put a dent in innovation, when a person works for a company that really has no interest in customer service, quality or a long range business plan and growth. Hedge funds destroy businesses instead of building a business. We have twenty year olds running companies who resent anyone who actually has years of experience on them and might see very quickly that they're incompetent. Between them and banks that won't loan money because they want to put it in their own pockets and too many government regulations on businesses, the state of the economy shouldn't surprise any of us. Been there. Done that. Seen it all. By the same token--we have that kid with his invention and others like him. We need innovation and we need people who can overcome all of that bad stuff and see a lot further down the road to what's possible, what hasn't been done, what's needed. I think those people exist-because they always have.
And yes John, please keep doing what you do. I've discovered a lot of authors here I never would have read otherwise.

re: Book ads coming

this seems a lot like Bookpage which I pick up at the library and go thru marking new books I want to read. I don't know what exactly it will consist of so I have a wait and see attitude re this and having an opt out option is nice to know ahead of times. Still...aren't we all about books? As someone said-those are the only ads I actually want to look at....

re: re: A dangerous idea

Simplicity is one of the key words here. Money is the other. I might sound like a broken record but many of us have a budget and have to consider it. Like many, I also have an acct on PBS but I don't use it and don't even have any listed there. I prefer this site and the simlicity of it. I wouldn't consider buying bks here-but I will ship them out. I'd rather spend my money on shipping.

re: Wishlist griping

People do seem to forget that if they want a book badly enough they can go buy it at the bookstore. I do. They also forget that most people have a library nearby. I live in a small town and our library has a very small budget. We have only one bookstore in town that carries new bks (and a few used bkstores). I have a large personal library and a good backlog of bks to read so no problem waiting a long time for bks. People today do need to be told to be patient or head to the bookstore or buy online (where there is almost always anything you could possibly want).I found a rare bk online last yr-it cost over 300 dollars but was for a birthday gift and the only thing the person wanted.
People expect everything instantly and sometimes have to be told life doesnt work that way no matter what they think. There's really no acceptable excuse for griping about having to wait on a bk or not finding it right away. That's real life.
Re getting the covers and info imported-hurray!! because if there is no cover photo and no summary I'm not even going to consider a bk at first glance.

re: Not much junk on BM

The 'no description' 'no cover photo' being a problem is true. I am an artist and what attracts me to a book (other than the title or author)is visual and so a cover first of all--if it is a terrible cover I'll possibly pass it over unless there is ample and interesting description--if there is no description either I'm really likely to pass it over-an author new to me will not stop me from mooching if the description and cover appear worthwhile--I have read lots of authors new to me--by the same token I am also very into medieval history including excavations and historical soc docs which can have bland covers but I expect that-it isn't the cover but what's inside that matters in that case-

re: Not much junk on BM

I don't want a mailing deadline and would leave the site if one is imposed-people forget they are getting the bk free and can go out and buy it if they don't want to wait-we all have bills to pay and many of us are mailing despite working around tight budgets/layoffs/unemployment etc--I've waited months for bks and am just glad to get them when i do--it is always an option for an impatient moocher to cancel--as to mega printings-that is where I see a possible cap but stating that another generation of readers or intl readers might want them is true-and as to old books yes yes list them--as Kim says one made a great difference for her-I too homeshooled my boys and was aware of Montessori from very early on thru books from the library--there is a renewed interest also in authors from the 50s/60s/70s like Truman Capote--a whole new generation is discovering those books--which you might find at an estate sale or resale shop

re: End of +.1 for leaving feedback

I'm glad someone detailed the Angel Network because I've never been able to figure out just how it worked. I also do hope people will still acknowledge receipts-but those who didn't to begin with still won't either way--condition of bk being pt of setup procedure instead of optional is fine but a lot of people do not like having to note that at all--as someone who does not like damaged books-I would appreciate a condition notation mandatory even if it a cklist w/details optional-I also adhere to the policy of 'if I wouldn't want it in this condition I will not list it'. The only case where I might would be in a bk listed on many many wishlists. Which brings up something else-I understand that the listings are shrinking but I am going to suggest shrinking them a bit further-why not have a cap on how many copies of a bk can be listed--some of these are pretty far out there and it would seem there are likely few avid readers who haven't already read them--as much as it hurts-the xtra hundreds and hundreds or thousands of copies need to go in a recycling bin. I don't have to list titles here and I realize that makes all of us squeamish--but realistically-can there be a cap?It isn't any big deal and has nothing personally to do with me at all-but if we pick up bks at the resale shops, estate sales, yard sales etc with other readers in mind we need to be aware of what not to pick up--as no one is going to want it---
one other thing-magazines-it's been brought up before-we need a category that is not just 'hand listed' but magazines in general so that we can list them as such and people can pull them up as such. Once again a lot are listed that should go in the recycling bin but I for one would like the photoshop art mags like Somerset and I'm sure there are wants for other mags-Somerset is a 14.99 mag--some of the others are as much or more as any new bk--
