Description: |

Memoir Arriving from China with her Mother and Father and settling in NYC as undocumented immigrants, the author describes the fear of being deported and also the lack of good jobs for her parents who were highly educated. The lack of money meant small apartments and very little food. Qian was shunned by her schoolmates since she did not speak English. She takes refuge in the library and teaches herself to read. She enjoys the city, especially Chinatown and becomes a successful student, and eventually a lawyer. To read the challenges the family has to survive helps to understand how hard it is to be undocumented in America. |
