It is a different kind of memoir, as the author has spent most of her adult life ghostwriting for other people - their correspondences, interviews, newspaper columns and even novels. It is partly an account of this with one particularly long-lasting and eccentric employer and partly a meditation on how she became enchanted with language and its possiblities early in life.
