#1 of the Precious Ramotswe series
This was a very unique book. The setting is Botswana Africa. The story telling is impeccable. Its about a woman who sets up a Detective Agency. But before you dive into her life as a detective, you learn a bit about her background and the history of the land. She was married to a musician who was mean and beat her. She also had a child that lived 5 days. Her father worked in the mines and died of lung disease as a result. Her clients and the jobs she does are well told. She has a lot of friends in the area. One of them, a mechanic, asks her to marry him. She says no at first but yes when he asks her again at the end. I really enjoyed this book.

This book surprised me because I was expecting a typical detective story like those from Agatha Christie. But in a way, the protaganist, Precious Ramotswe, IS like one of Ms. Christie most famous, Miss Marple; only Precious is how you'd expect Miss Marple to be as a young woman (only African) . . . intelligent, intuitive but most importantly, thoroughly part of her surroundings. You get to see Africa from the understanding eyes of someone who loves it, so far removed from the Africa that leaps into most of minds in the USA. (Did your mom ever try to coax you to eat, saying "There are people starving in Africa!"?) Anyway, I enjoyed this story and am looking forward to reading others.

This is such a good book--I am going to see how many in the series I can find at the local library and the rest I'll mooch, OF COURSE!
