Born in 1875 into a large farming family in N.C., Attie was called to the China mission field at age 14. Arriving in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion, she coped with famines, floods, sickness, death and foreign invasions. In 1941, she was captured by the Japanese and interned for 2 years. The 67 pictures of Attie and the Chinese people with whom she worked are unique.
