Reviews: James Wood (USA: UT) (2008/04/08):
This book is one of my all time favorites. the primary characters are at once unbelievably out of this world, and at the same time intimately relateable. Mr Steakley's combat sequences are engrossing, and they draw your imagination in to the fight like no other.
The intertwined stories of Felix in the armor, the researchers trying to piece together his history, and the rogue who is just out to save himself while discovering his won self worth are engrossing and captivating.
While I can't imagine how Jeff could follow this story up, I have always mourned the lack of a sequel, or expansion of this universe. I was happy to see several copies of this available here, as it is out of print, and a team of horses could not drag my well worn copy away from me. I recommend this book to anyone, sci-fi fan or not!

Gary (USA: MA) (2009/05/29):
COSMIC WAR

The planet was called simply A-9. The air was unbreathable, the water poisonous. But it had to be conquered, for it was the home world of the most implacable ememies that cosmically expanding humanity had yet encountered.

Body armor had been devised for the commando forces that were to be dropped on A-9 - the culmination of ten thousand years of the armorers' craft. A man in that armor would be stronger than a 20th Century tank force. But the enemy had a weapon that was its equal - sheer murderous mass attack by a horde of thousands of antlike almost unkillable beings.

But there is more to war than battle - there is always the question of the human being within the armor. And in this unforgettable tale of such a man, John Steakley has given us a novel of cosmic combat that will stand against the best of Gordon Dickson or Poul Anderson.

I read this book when it came out in 84 and never forgot it. If you like space combat, this book beats them all, even Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Do yourself a favor and find the only other book I ever found by this author, Vampire$, also unforgettable.
