I haven't read this book in years but I it's definitely memorable as is anything by Mary Webb. She was writing during the era of Hemingway, Fitzgerald and the like, but in a VERY dissimilar style, unworthy of much notice at the time. She wasn't "hip" or "scene" for that era. She speaks to a very old place in women's hearts. LOVE her, and love "Gone to Earth" by her even more than this one. I've had my dog-eared copy for years and have reread it several times. I wish she'd be rediscovered. Oprah, are you reading this?
