Description: Product Description
The identity of the most notorious murderer of all time has long remained a mystery. After 12 years of research, Bruce Paley believes he has uncovered the real face behind the chilling murders of Jack the Ripper. In this book, Paley presents the evidence he has collected and identifies his suspect.
Reviews: Julie Dawson (United Kingdom) (2006/11/14):
I think more books have been written about Jack The Ripper than any other homicidal maniac in history, and most forward a theory of the identity of the infamous murderer. I have read a handful of "Ripper" books, including Patricia Cornwell's "Portrait Of A Killer", but this is the only one that I have read more than once. This is not because I find the author's argument convincing (in fact - in my opinion - he's way off the mark but I won't spoil it for the reader by revealing who he forwards to be the killer), but because I found the author's description of the slums of East London and the miserable lives and conditions of the poor people absolutely compelling. The introduction is written by Colin Wilson who concurres that "whether Bruce's theory is correct seems to me relatively unimportant when compared with the fact that his obsession with [the possible killer's name] has led him to write the most evocative book on the period that I have ever read". The author quotes extensively from Jack London's "The People Of The Abyss", and after reading Bruce Paley's book I went on to read London's account of the slum life, which is now one of my favourite novels. I highly recommend this book for the descriptions of the East End ghetto alone, and for that reason I would duelly recommend it for anyone interested in the historical poverty of 19th century London.
