Reviews: mystfromthesea (USA: IL) (2007/10/10):
I did not like this book. Most of the characters have immoral and horrible personalities, so I really didn't care for any of them. It didn't matter to me whether they lived or died. I felt no remorse for Grendel's situation, he complained about his life, and then went and made things worse for himself. The philosophy of the book got tedious, boring, and irritating. Although, I did have one thing in common with Grendel; it was the part when he was losing interest in the Dragon's dialogue. I thought that was kind of funny.
I can't say that I'm glad I had read it, but I suppose I've satisfied my curiousity.

Mekashef (Canada) (2012/10/31):
John Gardner's erudition and wit spice up this delectable reimagining of the classical monster. "Grendel" is a sort of prequel to "Beowulf," and therefore presupposes a certain degree of familiarity with early English literature. It should not be mistaken for a fantasy novel; it does not have a straightforward plot, nor very many of the usual tropes of the genre. It should rather be construed as a narrative exploration of what separates monsters from men.

"Grendel" is a rare book, which must be enjoyed for its own merits. Give it a chance and it will likely grow on you, if you keep an open mind.
