Once I saw that this book was about the real woman who inspired the character Alice from Alice In Wonderland, I had to read it. There were many things I did not know. For example, Lewis Carroll is a pen name for Charles Dodgson, who took pictures of children that even in his time was considered scandalous.I know this book is going to be one of my top ten for 2010. I know, I know the year just started, but this book is good. It just captured Alice's world, heartaches, love and relationship with her family so well that I didn't want to put it down.

I can’t believe that I am over the age of 30 and had no idea that Alice, from Alice in Wonderland was written after a real girl. I never liked the animated movie as a child (That Queen of Hearts scared the dickens out of me!). I liked it a little more when they made the newest one with Johnny Depp, but let’s face it – who doesn’t like a movie with Johnny Depp. I guess it just never occurred to me that she was real. Having said that; I loved this book. Once I started it, I just couldn’t put it down. Benjamin did a wonderful job telling the life of Alice and her family with the connection of Mr. Dodgson aka Lewis Caroll. I thought she did a brilliant job with the research and carrying out the character development of people with whom she never met. Although it was a bit disturbing at times – it gave us another look at the “real” Alice. Also, looking at the relationship between Alice and Mr. Dodgson from the outside seems so inappropriate that it’s a wonder that the nanny or the mother didn’t pick up on it sooner. Why would a man of 30 want to hang out with little girls all the time? Overall I give this book a B+
