Several millinnia in the future, Earth has become a backwater planet, ignored by others in the galaxy. Its one jewel is Cirque, the City on the Abyss, into which the River Fundament falls in magnificent cataracts. It is a city of love and harmony, with inspiring religious rites.

But in the Abyss there lives the Beast, loathsome to imagine, frightening to confront, for it was formed from the castoff hates of the Cirquians: a Beast whose body is refuse, whose mind is black as sin. And now, after centuries, it is climbing out of the Abyss to claim its own.

The Cirquians' feeble weapons are no match for the Beast's slimy encroachment on the city. When it breaches the defenses of the Cathedral of the Five Elements and confronted by Salamander the High Priestess and Gregorian the fire sculptor, the Beast's true nature flowers, to make Cirque forever the Mecca of the Galaxy.

Terry Carr was born in Grants Pass, Oregon; and lives in Oakland, California. Primarily know as a science fiction anthologist, he has been a professional writer since 1962. A collection of his short stories, "The Light at the End of the Universe," was published in 1976. "Cirque" is his first novel.
