Anne Moore (USA: MI) (2008/03/08): This is one of Dickson and Anderson's two collections of interconnected, humorous short stories about humans dealing with an alien culture. They're quite over the top silly. There's a certain thread of human imperialism (as might be inferred from the title) in the stories that may bother some readers, but if one can put that aside, the book's a lot of fun.Back cover blurb: Culture shock was never this much fun! When Ensign Alexander Braithwaite Jones crash-landed on the planet Toka, he didn't know what to expect...but it certainly wasn't the strange, charming creatures he found! Furry, friendly, and literal-minded, the Hokas had clearly met Earthpeople before Jones arrived -- for they loved to recreate Earth history on Toka. Only they had trouble telling fact from fiction. Suddenly, Jones's serious military career turned upside down, and he was caught in some zany intergalactic adventures -- from a hair-raising drug bust in Victorian England to swashbuckling piracy on the high seas. And then there was the beautiful blonde, Tanni... Join Jones as he tries -- without much success -- to bring sanity and civilization to the Hokas.
