I read this book twice. The first time was several years ago,and I remembered it fondly for years, but not the details. So I read it again. It is beautifully written; part of me read it just because it was so well crafted. The character development is excellent and I found myself thinking about the 4 main characters when I was not reading the book, wanting to know where this story was going. It is, as the review states, reminiscent of Charles Dickens, however, what is interesting is that I only remembered the warmest parts of the story from my first reading, not the sad. It is a statement of the more troubled times in India. This is one book I will not give away - It's staying in my library!
