Fictionalised account of Brooke's relationship with a maid, Nell Golightly, as he studies in Cambridgeshire just prior to the First World War. Beautiful descriptions of the Fenlands and Nell is a likeable down to earth character needed as a balance to Brooke's. He is presented as tortured and self indulgent as he tries to come to terms with his confusion over his sexual identity and is never a likeable character. An interesting read rather than an enjoyable one.
