Reviews: Amy J (USA: CO) (2006/08/07):
I enjoyed this book tremendously. Fascinating portrait of life in turn of the century Hawai'i as seen through the eyes of the "inmates" of the Moloka'i leper colony. Moving story line, interesting characters, very well written.

sherrie (USA: PA) (2009/04/27):
This book was very interesting, It really tells a story of triumph, trials and tributlations, and how you can overcome anything and make the best of a bad situation. I enjoyed it.

Erin Hunt (USA: UT) (2015/08/12):
Three stars, in my opinion, is a bit generous for this book. It was okay, but not great. I liked it, but didn't like it at the same time. The biggest problem I had with Moloka'i was the fact that throughout most of the book the author really struggled and shied away from moments of conflict and the emotional depth that comes with drama. The characters and story could have been so much bigger, but Brennert seemed to consistently snub them, opting for easier outs.
Almost any time Rachel was faced with something horrible (which was often) she would flee the scene, cry, and then the next passage would read something like "later that year". Not only was it jarring, it was also frustrating as a reader knowing that certain moments of tension or angst would never be resolved.
I also felt that Rachel, among others, never seemed to truly grow and blossom as a character. She handled most situations presented to her ... poorly. And she never seemed to learn from her mistakes, or shortcomings, and was hardly, if ever, apologetic for her actions.
All in all, I can see how some people ended up loving the book, but I can also see how others ended absolutely hating it. Unfortunately, I'm just kind of stuck between the two. Like other reviewers I feel that the book had so much potential, but ultimately, it fell flat.
