Reviews: MissMac (United Kingdom) (2007/05/06):
The ultimate in Gothic horror stories. It's hard to credit that Mary Shelley was still a teenager when she wrote this story of Victor Frankenstein's obsessive creation of a creature from parts who he finally brought to life, only to reject. The creature is kindly at heart, but is rejected, spurned and feared by humans who cannot see beyond his horrific appearance.

The creature turns to revenge, especially after Victor abandons his agreement to create the monster a mate so that he is no longer alone. We witness the murders of those Victor loves, including his own choice of a bride, the lovely Elizabeth. The book then turns into a race of creator and created across the globe and through the Arctic wastes, until both lives end.

The book is very much one of my old favourites. Shelley's imagery is fantastic and you cannot help but swing between sympathy for the creature to feeling heartbreak for Victor as he watches his loved ones die because of his deeds. Not to be missed!
