Most of the novel is a story of tribal life and politics - written in beautifully simple spare prose. Then a white Christian missionary arrives, and the many themes which have been building, come together. I was expecting this much-lauded "first African novel in English" to be something of a trial piece. It is not - it really is something of a masterpiece. Recommend.
