darkwood (Australia) (2007/09/11): This is a beautifully soft, velvety Irish tale of Lucy Gault's life from childhood to old age. Her life has been unusual, and often talked about to the point where fact and fancy combine. There is one central question which must be answered, which propels the reader through the book. When that question is answered, one realises that much more important things have been disclosed in the reading. I read this in two sittings and will definitely put William Trevor's other books on my wishlist.
The book was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize of 2002.
