Reviews: Anna (USA: TX) (2016/12/06):
Warning note: this novel has themes of assault of violence. Though the overall emotional setting of the story is dreary, the ending can be interpreted as gently uplifting if you note Coetzee's nuanced depictions of tone and character development.

Well written, but difficult story, that is easy to consume.
The principle focus is the viewpoint of the male protagonist whose behaviour the reader is surely not expected to condone. He is clearly at sea with changes to perceptions of social norms in a changed society (which we can presume to be related to TRC and aftermath) and moves from one faux pas to the next, disgracing himself in the process. Despite understanding that his world view is at odds with his beloved daughter, we are left wondering what he has actually learned.
Reasonably enough, it is left to the judgement of the reader to contemplate the future for the principle characters at the end of the novel.
This reader was left with the impression that the author understood the outlook of his main character, and possible mitigations for his follies, but did not seem able to articulate the viewpoint of the other characters to anything like the same degree; especially not the daughter. A shame because the novel is so well written. What would Antjie have said?
