DESCRIPTION FROM BACK COVER, NOT A REVIEW:
Charles Anstruther, a popular mystery story writer, had long been interested in the unsolved murder of the millionaire John Fortescue. He had spent much time and effort sifting all the available evidence and tracking down various clues. And he was near a solution to the case.
One warm summer night Anstruther left his uptown club and took the Fifth Avenue bus home. Double-decker buses were quite common in New York in the 1920s and Anstruther chose to sit well up forward on the upper deck. At the end of the run, at Washington Square, the conductor mounted the stairs for a last survey of the upper seats. Anstruther's crouched figure made no answer to the conductor's polite "End of the run, sir," because sometime during the course of the bus's run his throat had been nearly cut.
It was now up to Van Dusen Ormsberry, a great but very human detective, to take charge of this baffling case and determine if the man who killed Fortescue was indeed responsible for Anstruther's death....
